Finance can be a force for good. The UK and our European Partners believe that the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will be a significant force for good. Its ethos of being “lean, clean and green” and its focus on infrastructure that will improve the lives and economic prospects of the 4.5 billion people who live in Asia are both greatly welcomed.

Nicholas Beale’s article ‘Investor engagement becoming a force for good’ has been published in the Economist China Edition.

Chinese investors are increasingly important globally. China is now a net exporter of capital and this is likely to increase during 2015. Mandates to manage Chinese money are eagerly sought by Western investment management firms, and it would be logical for Chinese investors to attach a great deal of weight to the extent that these firms act as responsible investors. Equally when Chinese firms and institutions invest abroad it is wise for them to invest responsibly.

Nicholas Beale’s co-authored article, ‘Framing Finance as a Force for Good’, was published in the October issue of WTO Tribune. The article draws on a lecture by Katherine Garrett-Cox, CEO of Alliance Trust, and further explores how finance can be used to encourage long-term and responsible corporate behaviour.

 

Harvard Business Review China: "Why is the UK such a great source of innovation?"

The article ‘Why is the UK such a great source of innovation?’ has been published in the September edition of Harvard Business Review China. The article was co-authored by Nicholas Beale with David Willetts and Greg Clark.

The article outlines the UK’s innovation history from Shakespeare to the present, with examples from ARM, AstraZeneca, BP and Rolls-Royce. Key factors include openness to ideas and people and the presence of world-class universities.

Harvard Business Review China Interview

8th July 2014

Nicholas Beale was interviewed by He Gang, Editor of Harvard Business Review China on 8 July 2014. They discussed the recent visit of Premier Li Keqiang to the UK and Sciteb’s sponsoring of the Dinner held in the Premier’s honour. At the VIP reception Nicholas met Premier Li and his wife Professor Cheng Hong, and was able to present the Premier with a copy of Harvard Business Review China containing Nicholas’ article, ‘In Business and Battle: Strategic Leadership’.

Nicholas’ next article, on UK innovation, co-authored by David Willetts (former Minister of State for Universities and Science) and Greg Clark (current Minister for Universities, Science and Cities) is expected to be out in the September edition of Harvard Business Review China.

Nicholas Beale’s article ‘Individual and Systemic Risk: Present and Future’ has been published in the Tsinghua Financial Review.

The Tsinghua Financial Review aims to analyse economic and financial situations, interpret economic and financial policies, and offers suggestions on economic and financial practices. The journal has links to the Tsinghua PBC School of Finance where Nicholas Beale gave a seminar earlier this year.

 

Harvard Business Review China: "In Business and Battle: Strategic Leadership"

Nicholas Beale’s article, ‘In Business and Battle: Strategic Leadership’, published in the March edition of Harvard Business Review China became the most clicked page on the website.

The article begins with the question ‘What do Generals and CEOs have in common when they deal with Strategy?’. It discusses three aspects of strategic leadership: strategic courage, adaptability and leadership by values, highlighting examples of such leadership at Rolls-Royce, ARM and Lenovo, and during World War II, and concluding: ‘Strategic courage, adaptability and leadership by values will generally improve the odds for success, both in business and in battle’.
